A Minimum of 98 Palestinians Have Died in Custody Since October 2023, Israeli Data Indicates
Per information released by Israel, at least 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody starting from October 2023. High-Profile Cases
Several casualties in confinement have been widely reported, for instance a middle-aged hospital director who died in prison after 120 days in detention.
A detainee incarcerated with the individual stated that he was brought to the courtyard by prison staff just prior to his demise, clearly wounded and unclothed from the waist down. His corpse has not been returned to Gaza.
Other prisoners who lost their lives in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and military gave researchers with the total of fatalities in custody, and limited additional information including the facility where they died, but without the detainees’ identities.
Documentation Problems
For 21 instances, mainly detainees from Gaza, analysts were not able to connect the minimal data given by officials to a casualty documented by rights organisations, by means of accounts from freed prisoners or coverage in the news outlets.
The prisoners’ relatives could be unaware about their family members’ fatalities either, as Israel has impeded efforts to locate detainees it is holding.
