American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 08:45 local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the US, could experience difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in California to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including pilot training.

It led a number of flight controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his first term as leader, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
