A fundraising initiative is aiming to propel a Palestinian lullaby to the top of the UK charts. The project hopes to send support to people in Gaza while also spotlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
A Chance for Support and an "Unlikely Coup"
Composer and producer Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a moment to support Palestinians this festive season. He acknowledged the potential for an surprise number one.
“It would be fantastic if that came to pass, yes,” he said. “I won't be completely disappointed if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a category of their own.”
Resilient Spirit of Self-Determination
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the adaptation of a folk song called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's powerful central theme.
“The song holds a very special place for a lot of people,” Barghouti explained. “The essence is that I would rather die in dignity than live a life without freedom. That’s the main theme of the song; we want to live a respectful existence that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
Production History and Featured Artists
The song was recorded following a large-scale benefit event held in late summer. Initially planned to be captured during the live event, the performance was cut from the show due to scheduling overruns.
The notable list of musicians appearing on Lullaby features a selection of well-known figures from the industry. All were part of the September show, which successfully generated a considerable total for relief efforts.
Final Touches and Availability
Lullaby was produced by a trio of producers and composers. The song features a fusion of the heritage language with contemporary English verses.
The group managing the project have stated that their aim is to collect the highest amount for a specific fund. These resources will be allocated to projects in Palestine through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“We don’t have a rigid aim,” a spokesperson explained. “We’ll go for as much as possible. Naturally, the higher the total, the greater the impact. All proceeds are directed out to those in need in Gaza.”
The situation in the region was characterized as its profound destruction, with a vast majority of property reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“Given that reality, a few million doesn’t make an enormous impact. But I think what does make a difference is first of all spreading knowledge of this plight and proving there’s another side to the story.”
The track is scheduled for release this Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the charity concert will be made accessible to view on a digital service from the 19th of December.
