"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a single issue: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Several high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the position.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed toughness called for a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However Haim will forever be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
