For the Cashier That Left Me Absolutely Without Words – Kudos to You
This occurred on a day of rest, and I was sufficiently irritable, filling up my mother's vehicle. The location was a typical gas station that also functions as a supermarket, which often leads of waiting behind people bearing baskets of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to occur when all you want is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.
I was fourth in the queue. A single cashier operating, a female attendant. Something stood out in her demeanor. When the faffer at the first position had completed payment for a cleaning product, his pastry, and some breakfast items, I was certain that I heard the cashier bid him to have a great day. Unusual. Could be I misunderstood, or perhaps she spoke and used a mocking tone. The thought crossed my mind if perhaps she was a supporter in my fight against faff, echoing my disdain for individuals slowing down simple fuel-buyers such as myself.
I moved up, now third in line. The next shopper of our group completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here wishes anyone those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Quite out of place. It's uncommon to find many Americans visiting this town, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or elsewhere.
Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper dealing with a lengthy struggle with her basket, her food items, her wallet and her rewards card. It went on for ever. After she finished, she as well was wished a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. I might have verified it by saying something hilarious to her, to see if she did that response their typical stare, without a smile, and reply with genuine earnest: “That’s really funny.” However, nothing occurred of anything hilarious to express.
In the end, I embraced for the absolute sincerity – or a mimicry of sincerity, that equates to the same thing – with which she looked me right in the eye, piercingly, and wished me to have a great day. My spirits lifted. Beneficial indeed.
