Cyclone the storm is forecast to strengthen into a rare highest-level hurricane as it veers in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

This weather system, which registered wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to reach land by Tuesday, according to hurricane specialists.

Advisories of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as this storm generates up to 30 inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 13ft above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," residents have been urged.

This hurricane is the 13th named storm in the current Atlantic season, which typically ends in late autumn.

A category five hurricane is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

The country's head of government the statesman said: "I understand that there are numerous residents who are concerned, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"But the most effective method to handle worry and any unease and worry is to be prepared."

Inhabitants are being advised to fortify their houses with protective bags and timber panels, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Advisories are also ongoing for regions of Haiti such as the primary urban center, the adjacent nation and eastern Cuba, where this storm is expected to bring similar effects by the midweek period.

Landslides already being caused by the hurricane have already killed two in Haiti, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

This weather system is forecast to pass over the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Caribbean archipelago and entering the Atlantic Ocean.
