Is the Entertainment Fading? The Fall of the Goal Scoring
A key narrative of the EPL this campaign concerns the drop of scoring in open play and the way clubs are finding goals more from set-plays as an alternative.
Looking at scoring methods to the first 11 games the prior season, there have been a drop of 39 scored in open play and 26 more from team set-pieces and penalties, leading to 13 fewer overall.
Examining the bigger picture, shot attempts clubs are making show a remarkable drop of 370 in open-play than at this stage last season.
And despite the significant rise in set-piece goals, records show a mere two extra attempts produced from them outside of spot-kicks, showing the proficiency sides have been at finding ways to score from dead-ball chances.
Scoring Rates Reveal the Tale

Meanwhile City have seen the largest rise, with nearly all of their 23 goals to date arriving in open-play.
Set-Piece Success
We've compared clubs that came up with those that were relegated that they superseded. Sunderland Sunderland have recorded an additional three scores in open play than the Saints did in their opening 11 matches en route to demotion the previous campaign.
When it comes to goals scored from set-plays (excluding penalties), Arsenal and the Blues have experienced the biggest increase, with the two clubs compensating for the five fewer scores that they've produced in open play with the same number from dead-ball situations.
Manchester United have scored two times more scores from set-pieces as they achieved in the first 11 matches last season before Ruben Amorim took charge, while the Black Cats once more are better at converting than the club they replaced they replaced.
Manchester City appear not to have received the memo about scoring more from set-pieces, as they've scored three less than the previous campaign, similar to Nottingham Forest, though that might be down to the altered approach they've attempted to adopt.
League-Wide Trends
Six sides – Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, the Magpies, Spurs and the Hammers – are this season's leading trend-followers by scoring fewer goals from open play and more from set-pieces, while City are the only side to defy the pattern so far by performing the exact opposite.
It remains to be seen to watch if sides persist to rely so heavily on set-plays as the campaign progresses or if they regain their general attacking flair and start netting increased totals in open-play also.
