The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what people claim," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
