Warrick Stock was shot by a man with dreadlocks in the middle of the day, police say.

A popular South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation grappling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by three individuals, with one opened fire on him before running away.

The motive of the attack is unknown and no arrests are in custody, as per the official statement.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had devoted time at the building overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"It is alleged the man was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," a police statement stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a security uniform opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Important clues, like spent shells, were discovered at the scene.

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"We know they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to determine their destination," remarked an authority figure.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, Nicole Stock, stated the relatives are devastated to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He spoke out bravely about topics not many people were willing to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."

She appealed to the community to not sharing graphic images from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's young family.

His Professional Legacy

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that premiered on a popular local broadcasting platform.

Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various business ventures, including private security, supplying VIP protection services and managing safety for high-profile events across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and assisted with property reclaimations.

Official and Public Tributes

His murder has caused national trauma and triggered an flood of condolences from his followers, the authorities and various organizations.

A senior figure remarked he was angry and saddened by Stock's untimely death.

"He was forthright without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my actions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we should be," he stated.

A political leader commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".

In a release, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will endure".

South Africa, the region's leading economy, has one of the planet's most severe murder rates, driven by theft-related violence and organized criminal activity, with some dozens of citizens murdered daily between April and September, as per police data.
