Outrage Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Backlash
Individuals from across the political spectrum and the entertainment industry are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
“What a appalling and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Rebuke from Within Party
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "absolute horror" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of another political figure.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
