A person who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to minors at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two boys aged nine and ten years old.

The accused was detained after eight children and an older person became sick at Stathern Lodge in July.

The senior citizen, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on the end of the week.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was kept in jail before a subsequent court date on late November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a summer camp which he operated.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the minors, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were getting ready for bed and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC added: "Recently" his family member had worries about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel explained objects including infant oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were located, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She stated Ruben continued to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that time," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the family member notified the law enforcement a second time.

She explained the man then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five minors.
