Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach conceded that it's expected for concerns to be raised about his position after another heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their 9th loss in twelve matches, representing the team's worst run after being demoted in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Eredivisie champions on a tough night at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I've received a lot of support from management,” the coach remarked.
“It would be nice to turn it around and get a victory of course but if you are in a managerial role and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He continued, “I am OK with my situation. It is not the initial instance I’ve been in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we improved our results.”
Conversations with The Board
Upon being questioned to provide details on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach revealed:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me every single minute of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal discussions I feel the trust. However I haven’t spoken to them since this match so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted familiar shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their European loss, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past getting mad inside. I’m at the point now where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He continued, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a phase such as this with results this poor.”
He concluded, “However we still have that badge on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad return to where it needs to be, prove again the values of this club and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and it must improve.”
