The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined term surfaced a few months after the start of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for physicians to treat a minor who has seen the death of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
