The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and earning best player.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
