The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
