The Trump movement's most revealing and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have risked – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the old idea about democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they transformed an image of affection into an icon of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment among Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.

The evident and straightforward fact that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best Among Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by reference to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it unique and magnificent, which is the example of the Savior.
