The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the video.
We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site from which the pictures originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
