Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
