Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
